Free iPhone ringtone download in M4R
iPhone ringtones use the M4R format, Apple's ringtone version of AAC audio. Most free ringtone sites only offer MP3, which leaves you converting files yourself. Every tone on RingtoneDownload.org has an M4R file ready to go, trimmed to fit Apple's length limit with a soft fade at the end.
This page highlights tones that sound especially good on iPhone speakers. But you can use any tone on the site, since all of them come with an iPhone ringtone download.
How do I add a ringtone to my iPhone?
There are three ways:
- Files app (iOS 26 or later): download the M4R, open it in Files, tap Share, then Use as Ringtone. This works for tones up to 30 seconds.
- Computer: connect your iPhone, then drag the M4R onto it in Finder on a Mac, or into Tones in iTunes on Windows.
- GarageBand: import the file into GarageBand on your iPhone and use Share → Ringtone.
Our full iPhone ringtone guide shows each method step by step, with pictures.
Why can't I use an MP3 as a ringtone on iPhone?
iPhone only lists sounds in its ringtone format, so a plain MP3 will not show up in Sounds & Haptics. You would need to convert it first. That is why we give you the M4R directly, so there is nothing to convert.
Which ringtones sound best on iPhone?
iPhone speakers are clear in the middle and high range. Bright piano ringtones, soft instrumental ringtones and short notification sounds sound great. For text alerts, try our message tones.
Frequently asked questions
How do I put custom ringtones on my iPhone?
Download the M4R file, open it in the Files app, tap Share and choose Use as Ringtone (iOS 26 or later, tones up to 30 seconds). On older iOS versions, use GarageBand or Finder on a Mac.
Can I use a song as a ringtone on iPhone?
Yes, if you own the song and use it only on your phone. Trim it to 30 seconds, save it in Files and use Use as Ringtone or GarageBand. We do not offer song ringtones ourselves.
Do I need iTunes to add ringtones?
No. On iOS 26 or later you can do it right on your iPhone with the Files app. GarageBand also works with no computer at all.
Why is my ringtone not showing in Settings?
Check that the file ends in .m4r and is 30 seconds or shorter for the Files method. Then open Settings, Sounds and Haptics, Ringtone, and look at the top of the list.
