How to Set a Ringtone on iPhone (Free, No iTunes Needed)
Quick answer: To set a ringtone on iPhone, download an M4R file of 30 seconds or less, open it in the Files app, tap Share, then Use as Ringtone. This works on iOS 26 and later with no iTunes and no computer. On older iPhones, use GarageBand or drag the file onto your iPhone in Finder on a Mac.
For years, changing the ringtone on an iPhone was a chore. You needed iTunes, a cable and a lot of patience. That has changed. Since iOS 26, you can set a custom ringtone on iPhone right from the Files app in a few taps.
This guide shows you how to set a ringtone on iPhone in four free ways, from the quickest to the most old-school. Pick the one that fits your phone.
What do you need before you start?
Check these three things first. They solve most problems before they happen.
- The right file. iPhone ringtones use the M4R format. Every tone on RingtoneDownload.org has an M4R download, so you do not need to convert anything. Browse our ringtones for iPhone to find one.
- The right length. The Files method accepts tones of 30 seconds or less. The computer method allows up to 40 seconds. Shorter is safer.
- Your iOS version. Open Settings → General → About and look at iOS Version. If it says 26 or higher, use Method 1. If not, skip to Method 2 or 3.
Method 1: How do I set a ringtone from the Files app? (iOS 26 and later)
This is the easiest way to set a ringtone on iPhone without iTunes or a computer.
- Download the tone. Open any tone page on our site in Safari and tap Download M4R. Tap Download if Safari asks.
- Open the Files app. Go to Browse → Downloads (or On My iPhone → Downloads). Your tone is there.
- Open the Share menu. Touch and hold the file, then tap Share. You can also open the file and tap the Share icon.
- Tap "Use as Ringtone". Scroll down the Share sheet to find it. Your iPhone adds the tone to its ringtone list.
- Choose it. Settings opens to Sounds & Haptics. Tap Ringtone and check your new tone is ticked at the top of the list.
That is it. No cable, no app, no fee.
What if "Use as Ringtone" does not appear?
First, make sure you are on iOS 26 or later. Next, check the file is an audio file, not a web page or a ZIP. If the tone is longer than 30 seconds, iPhone shows a warning that it is too long. Pick a shorter tone, or trim it first with Method 2.
Method 2: How do I make a ringtone with GarageBand?
GarageBand is Apple's free music app. It works on almost every iPhone and needs no computer. It also lets you trim a long file to the right length.
- Install GarageBand from the App Store if you do not have it. It is free.
- Save your audio to Files. Download the M4R or MP3 from our site, or use any audio file you own.
- Start a new project. Touch and hold the GarageBand icon and tap Create New Audio Recording. Or open the app and choose Audio Recorder.
- Open the Tracks view. Tap the button with the stacked lines near the top left.
- Import your file. Tap the Loop icon (it looks like a loop of string) at the top right, then the Files tab, then Browse items from the Files app. Pick your tone.
- Drag it into the track. Touch and hold the file, then drag it to the start of the timeline.
- Trim to 30 seconds. Drag the end of the green clip to make it shorter if needed.
- Export as a ringtone. Tap the down arrow at the top left and choose My Songs. Touch and hold your project, tap Share, then Ringtone. Give it a name and tap Export.
- Use it. Tap Use sound as… and pick Standard Ringtone, Standard Text Tone or Assign to contact.
GarageBand looks busy the first time, but once you have done it, the whole thing takes about two minutes.
Method 3: How do I add a ringtone with a Mac (Finder)?
On a Mac with macOS Catalina or later, iTunes is gone, and Finder handles your iPhone.
- Download the M4R from the tone page onto your Mac.
- Connect your iPhone with a cable and unlock it. Tap Trust if your iPhone asks, and enter your passcode.
- Open Finder and click your iPhone under Locations in the sidebar.
- Drag the M4R file onto your iPhone's page in Finder, or onto its name in the sidebar.
- Wait for it to copy, then open Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone on your iPhone and pick the tone.
You do not need to turn on "Manually manage music" for this. The tone copies across on its own.
Method 4: How do I add a ringtone with a Windows PC?
On Windows, use iTunes for Windows:
- Connect and unlock your iPhone, then tap Trust.
- In iTunes, click the small iPhone button near the top left.
- Under On My Device, click Tones.
- Drag the M4R file into the Tones list and wait for it to sync.
If your PC uses Apple's newer Apple Devices app instead of iTunes, the menus are different. In that case, Method 1 or Method 2 is much quicker, and you do not need the PC at all.
How do I set a ringtone for one contact on iPhone?
Giving family or your boss their own ringtone means you know who is calling without looking.
- Open Contacts (or Phone → Contacts) and tap the person.
- Tap Edit at the top right.
- Tap Ringtone and pick a tone. You can also tap Text Tone to change their message sound.
- Tap Done.
Romantic tones are a popular choice for a partner. See our romantic ringtones for ideas.
Can I set a custom tone for texts and alarms too?
Yes. Once a tone is in your ringtone list, you can use it anywhere iPhone lets you choose a sound:
- Text messages: Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Text Tone.
- Alarms: Clock app → tap Edit on an alarm → Sound → choose it under Ringtones.
- Other alerts: New Mail, Calendar Alerts and Reminder Alerts are in the same Sounds & Haptics screen.
For short text sounds, browse our message tones. For waking up, try alarm tones.
Can I use a song as a ringtone on iPhone?
Yes, if you own the song file and you only use it on your own phone. Save the song to Files, trim it to 30 seconds with GarageBand (Method 2), and export it as a ringtone. Songs from Apple Music or Spotify are protected and cannot be used this way.
We do not offer song ringtones on this site, because we only share tones we have the rights to. Our piano ringtones and instrumental ringtones give you the feel of music without the copyright worry.
Why is my custom ringtone not working?
Here are the most common fixes:
- It does not appear in the list. Look at the very top of Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone. Custom tones sit above the built-in ones.
- The file is too long. Keep it at 30 seconds or less for the Files method.
- The file is MP3. Use the M4R download, or run it through GarageBand.
- No sound on calls. Check the Ring/Silent switch or the Action button, and make sure a Focus mode is not silencing calls.
- It sounds quiet. Turn up the volume in Sounds & Haptics. All our tones are balanced to the same level, so try another tone to compare.
How do I delete a custom ringtone?
Open Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone, then swipe left on the custom tone and tap Delete. Built-in Apple tones cannot be deleted.
